Computers can be traced back to the time human beings were struggling to invent non-electronic tools/ mechanical computers that would simplify arithmetic such as Abacus and Napier bones, analytical engine e.t.c

Abacus was a Chinese counting instrument which dates back to 3000 BC. It had bead like parts that move along rods. Each head above the middle bar represents five units while each head below stands for one unit.
To work with an abacus; add the raised units above the middle bar to the risen below the middle bar but on the same rod. Summation of each rod is written horizontally from left beginning with the thousands… units. A summation of ten (10) is always interpreted as a zero (0).
Napier bones developed by John Napier a Scottish mathematician in the 17thcentury helped in multiplication and division.
It was after this that the analytical engine was designed by An English mathematician, Charles Babbage in 1882. This engine is referred to as the first real computer thus the designer being the father of computers.
Engineers continually made advancements on this design over several years till we had the first electronic computer. These computers can be classified according to the years they were developed.(computer generations)
