Development of robots could be traced back in the 4th century BC during industrial revolution and the parallel introduction of electricity that led to use of complex mechanic machines that were powered by motors..

Simple fixed machines were made and used in industrial processes such as automated productions. It was from this succes that man improved on industrial robots to machines that surport artificial intelligence (AI).

AI is the ability of a device to mimic human funtioning.

Over centuries of innovation and creativity since the fourth century when the term Humanoid came into existence displayed in Tv series such as “the lonely episode.” Where Biggite Helm a Germany actresss impersonated a Gynoid.
In 1928 one of the first humanoids was exhibited at the annual exhibition of model engineering society.

It consisted of alluminium body of Armour, eleven electromagnetics, and a motor powered by a 12 volt power source. It could move its hands and head when controlled by a remote or voice.

Engineers later formulated robotic laws and cybernetic principles which led to development of robots with coplex behaviours such as Elsie & Elmer that were developed by William Grey Walter. Their ‘brain’ circutes used analogue electronics hence these machines worked slowly but they could be able to detect drainage of charge and move on their three wheels back to a recharge station.

George Devol in 1954 invented the first programmable robot which he named ultimate and sold it to General motors where it was installed and used to lift hot metal from a die casting machine and stacking them.
After development of ultimate many companies, engineering students and engineers have designed and developed many programmable humanoids and other robots including Tuna that simulated the swimming behavior of a fish, self driving cars, entertainment robots such as i-sobot that can walk like human beings, perform kicks, punches and some entertainment tricks all on its own.

Robots are commonly used in:

  1. Mass production of consumer products
  2. Earth and space exploration.
  3. Manufacturing industries
  4. Packing and assembling
  5. Surgery weaponry.
  6. Laboratory research.
  7. Transport .

They perform jobs with more accuracy, reliability & at a cheaper cost than human beings. Also they work on very dirty, dull or dangerous jobs for a human being to do.
With the unstoping advances in Computer hardware and software, humanoids are also getting widely spread and complex in character for instance the geminoid F; a female robot developed by proffesor Hiroshi ishiguro has been designed to act like a human being.
Geminoid F has the capacity to furrow ‘her’ eye brows, smile, frown, move her mouth, eyes and turn ‘her’ head. Actually it can sing and talk and recognizes human body language. It also can record and replay them through ‘her’ mouth with perfect mouth movements.
The only draw back with this robot is that it must be moved by a human however having been created with a rubber skin it is considered to be the most ‘beautiful’ robot. its male counter part is Geminoid M also with similar capacities. Below are images of GM & GF
